About Jefferson Davis

Through many decades, I’ve become a photographer. Not the kind who ever managed to pay the bills doing it alone, mind you, but my work has landed in magazine spreads and stock photography collections here and there. That counts for something, right?. I’ve been behind the lens for 40 years, shooting landscapes, cityscapes, and the odd bit of art that doesn’t fit neatly anywhere else. Unless I say otherwise, everything you see here is film. I like the grace of it. The patience it demands. (Digital shooters can get a shot and a nap in before I’ve finished metering.)
Beyond the camera, my life has flourished in a different way. In 2023, I married my best friend, Deana. Faith, laughter, love, the usual ingredients, though our journey since has taken a turn I didn’t see coming. Pun fully intended, thank you.
In January 2024, a routine MRI, meant to figure out what was causing my vertigo, turned up optic atrophy. My sight is diminishing, and it won’t stop. At present, I have two degrees of vision left, which is roughly enough to read a stop sign if I’m standing on top of it. Alas, that number will keep shrinking, until one day there’s nothing left to see with.
Deana has been the bedrock through all of it. Steady, unflinching, handling things with more dignity than I probably deserve credit for noticing. I try to give some of that back, mostly by not walking into furniture more than strictly necessary.
Losing my sight has brought me a great passion, advocating for others. In 2025 and 2026, I worked directly with Arizona Representative Walt Blackman (LD7) on HB 2064, legislation to strengthen penalties for drivers who injure blind and visually impaired pedestrians. The bill passed the judiciary committee 8-1 but was blocked before reaching a floor vote. I wrote about the whole fight here. It didn’t pass, but it won’t be the last attempt.
As this reality unfolds, I’m working on a handful of other creative projects, trying to get as much done as I can while the light holds out.
So, what else is there to know about Jefferson Davis?
I’m a good-hearted person, and I believe in Jesus Christ. My ancestry is a mix of Irish, Jewish, and Cherokee, but I am 100% American. I’m originally from South Carolina; these days, we live in Norman, Oklahoma, about two miles from the University of Oklahoma, close enough to hear the crowd on game days, far enough that I can pretend I don’t.
If you want to reach out, my email is always open: inquiries@jeffersondavis.us.
