One of the original 'boat people' who came to Australia and precipitated the origin of the 'refugee detention centres' that we have here and the resultant xenophobia about Afghan and Tamil refugees. His story is so interesting and so terrible. His father was a south Vietnamese engineer who fought with the Americans but when they left, he was well known to the Viet Kong and became a target. Both his sons spent time in detention/gaol before he took his family at great risk and expense by leaky boat to Australia. Trung spent 2 years in a Viet Kong jail before they left. Trung's family were then granted refugee status and he's never looked back. Such suffering. He was 22 at the time. He's such a valuable member of our team, it's hard to imagine that anyone would resent his settling here. People think he's Chinese . . .
