It is a well known fact that American kids test scores are at the bottom of the heap. Even the Slovak Republic out scores us. What does that tell you? Of course, all of this is child dependent. Parents that instill the necessity of a good education, usually have smart kids. But, it is very obvious that we are not doing enough to push a good education. We have some wonderful universities and private schools in this country, but parents should not have to starve in order for their children to have a well rounded education.
My parents sent me to private school, when I was in secondary (7th grade). When I arrived, I had to take an entrance exam, which told the professors that I was three to four years behind the rest of the population. I had to work tirelessly to catch up with the rest of the students that had been in private school all of their lives.
Back then, my parents paid around $400 (200GBP – 294 Euros) a month, and that was many – many years ago. That wasn’t a lot of money for them, but I had several friends whose parents worked two or three jobs, just so their kids could have a good education.
We have a catastrophe on our hands. I met a lad yesterday that is seventeen years old, and doesn’t know how to read. What does that say? It is sad, and downright ignorant for the most powerful country in the world to have nippers that can’t read. I’m so mad, I can’t see straight!
Needless to say, I’ve volunteered to help this guy learn how to read.
Good for you JD and your right, the only thing you can do for your kids is give them a good education, (at home as well as school)after that, they’re on their own. And I know what it’s like to have to catch up. I went to 3 high schools before year 10 in three states with different curriculums . . hard work but worth it.
Yo JD, take me off your blogroll please.
I’m shuffling off this coil permanently.
Baino, I went through five schools in seven years. I was either in the hospital or in the middle of moving all the time. My youth was very turbulent to say the least.
A good education is a must!
Daz, I’ve removed Hospital Daze from my blogroll. I hope I’ve not caused this turn of events. Mates for life, dude.
That is a sad indictment of the education system. And a travesty. Under the SA old apartheid regime too many kids were excluded from the education system – or from getting any sort of decent education. Now they demand education as a basic right – for it is – just like water and housing. Without a solid education how can we hope to create a better world. Mind you, that said, I think schools would do well to focus more on life and interpersonal skills. Far too many kids go out into the big wide world without a clue how to live a good life or raise a family.
Plato, in The Republic, had some interesting views on education!
Good interpersonal relations are melting away, like the polar icecaps! I completely concur! Today, I had to go to the admission office at my university to straighten out some detains, and I observed kids staring at their phones and entering text messages, than people actually socialising. I’m afraid that it’s a worldwide epidemic.
And, I so wish I could have attended Plato’s University, which I’m sure you know, was the first of its kind. He was way before his time!
I honestly don’t see why you’d think that you would, seeing as how I haven’t heard from you in many a hrvest moon, but I’m dropping all connections to blogging or anything of the sort.
I’m just tidying away my affairs.
Okay…
